The Holy Rosary Catholic Parish In Kensington

In memory of Fr Bill Jordan (31/8/35 - 8/8/13)

Fr William (Bill) Jordan, retired parish priest of St Brendan’s and Holy Rosary, passed away

on the 8th August 2013 after a short and sudden illness.

At both  his Vigil mass on Monday 12th August and Requiem Mass on Tuesday 13th August, it was standing room only at St Brendan’s.  Two fine tributes in a filled church, to an incredible priest who  had been part of the fabric of Flemington since 1985.  Fr Bill was described as genuinely kind, generous to the poor, holy, humble and dedicated to the community.

At those masses there were many laughs when reflecting on Fr Bill’s life.  But through all that there was the underlying sadness that we had lost someone who we treasured.

Fr Bill was born on 31st August 1935.  He studied at Corpus Christi College at Werribee and then in Rome, at Propaganda Fide College.  He was ordained on 21st December 1960.  After his ordination he remained in Rome where he went on to gain his Licentiate in Theology (1961) and graduate from his doctoral studies at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music (1967).

He then returned to Melbourne where he served as assistant priest in Carlton (1967), Caulfield South (1969) and West Melbourne (1971).  In 1984 he was appointed director of sacred music.

Fr Bill was appointed to St Brendan’s in Flemington in 1985 and then Holy Rosary in 2000 when the two churches were partnered.

He retired on 12th January 2011.

Fr Bill will always have a special place in the hearts of the parishioners of Flemington and Kensington.

"The passing of Father Bill allowed us to reflect on the many kind acts and words that he bestowed on those he met.  His legacy is one which will live eternally in the heart of Holy Rosary.  His life is a great example of the impact that each of us can have on our community.  The way in which we interact and care for those we meet daily helps to create a community that will sustain us even in the hardest of times.  When we walk the extra mile with each other we send a clear message on who we are and the importance that we place in building a strong, inclusive learning community."  Amanda Smith, Principal, Holy Rosary Primary School.
